A Remote Access Scam is a scam whereby the scammer convinces the victim to allow them access to their computer or devices. A third party is usually a masquerade where the scammer targets a person pretending to be a support tech from a well-known company such as Microsoft or their internet provider, and It helps the person get rid of alleged malware or virus from the computer or fix the non-existent issues. After obtaining the remote connection, they can either take sensitive information, install ransomware, or show fake bills for fabricated services.

These are some of the tips on how to avoid falling into Remote Access Scams:

  • Ignorance of unsolicited inbound tech support phone calls or emails should be exercised.
  • Concerning all coves, avoid allowing anyone that reaches to you out of the client’s whim to commandeer their machine.
  • Ensure the caller or company is legitimate by calling their business line.
  • Install and regularly update effective antivirus software that can protect your device against possible attacks.
  • Do not click on any links or download attachments in e-mails you do not expect from known contacts.
  • If you get a call such as that from tech support asking for money or remoting your system, cut the call immediately.
  • Improper installation of frequently updated operating systems and software exposes computers to more security risks.
  • Make sure you create complex and unique passwords for each of your accounts and when possible 2FA should be turned on as well.
  • Make it a habit to check for odd transactions on your bank accounts and credit and debit cards whenever you have had some strange interaction with someone.
  • Be cautious about email phishing that uses the brands of real companies for the purpose of getting you to provide access
